Operational Narrative – 94th “C” CBW:
  1. Date of Mission - 2 October, 1944.
    1. Target Attacked: Kassel, Germany (Visual Target)
    2. Force – 94th "A" Group. Thirty-eight aircraft, including two flying spares and three PFF ships, took off.
    3. Position – Briefed and flew as Division Lead Group.
    4. Lead Teams:
      Division Lead Group
(To IP & From Target to Base)
Division Leader: Lt. Col. Robert W. Burns
      Pilot:1st Lt Charles E. Wolcott
      Navigator:Major Ralph W. Menees
      Bombardier:1st Lt Wayne R. Smith

      Division Lead Group (Bomb Run)
Division Leader: Lt. Col Paul D. Wood
      Pilot:1st. Lt. Arthur Bartzocas
      Navigator:Carlton E. Mendell
      Bombardier:2nd Lt. Lloyd H. Kline
  2. Narrative.
    1.  Squadron & Group Assembly - Carried out as planned at the Kings Cliffe buncher at the briefed altitude of 11,000 feet.
    2.  Route Over England – Departure from the assembly point was made on time (0803). A course slightly outside of the briefed course was flown from the assembly point to Splasher 6, which was reached three minutes late (0829). Due to the fact that some other formations were flying a collision course with the briefed route, it was necessary to fly to the left of course between Splasher 6 and the English coast. As a result of this divergency [sic], departure from the English coast was made north of Clacton at 0838 (one minute late) at the briefed altitude of 15,000 feet.
    3.  Division Assembly Line – Due to the fact that the departure from the English coast was made to the left of course, a heading was taken which would permit a gradual return to the briefed route. No difficulties were encountered in doing this, and the Belgian coast was crossed at the briefed point at 0902 (two minutes late) at the briefed altitude of 15,000 feet. The 94th "A" Group was in its briefed position as the Division Lead Group.
    4.  Flight to Target – Due to the fact that the mickey [Radar] was not operating particularly well, a deviation from the briefed route was flown after reaching the Belgian coast. The error was discovered when the formation passed over Coblenz and encountered flak. A sharp left turn was made in order to intercept the briefed course. This was accomplished shortly before the IP [Initial Point of Bomb Run] was reached on course at 1023 (eleven minutes early). Shortly after the turn at the IP it became necessary for the deputy lead aircraft to take over when the mickey set in the lead aircraft was found to be inoperative.
    5.  Description of Bombing Run – The target was attacked by the use of PFF equipment with visual assistance. The lead squadron performed all sighting operations with the low and high squadrons following in trail and bombing on the Leader's smoke marker.
A normal turn was made at the briefed IP. There was seven to eight-tenths cloud cover in the target area.
The briefed MPI [Mean Point of Impact] was covered with clouds, but the eastern edge of the plant was identified about one minute before the Bomb release line. Interference on the bombing run was caused by flak and clouds.
The PFF equipment in the lead ship went out about half way down the bomb run and the deputy lead took over. Due to severe interference, the mickey operator picked up Gottingen and started a bomb run. Northeast of Kassel it was realized that the set was not operating properly. The course was altered and a PFF run was started on the PFF started in Kassel. The PFF equipment in the deputy aircraft (then leading) went completely out on this run. The leader attempted to make a visual run on Kassel when the Primary Target was seen through a break in the clouds. The course was again altered, and a six mile run was made on the Primary Target.
    6.  Flight From Target – After bombing, a turn to the right was made as planned. (The Track Chart indicates the briefed turn as being to the left. This was to be followed if a PFF target was attacked, but as the visual target had been bombed, the briefed turn was to the right - as made). The briefed route was followed with slight deviation to 50°08'N-07°44'E. At that point the malfunctioning mickey set in the lead ship (the lead ship took over again after bombing) was responsible for a deviation to the north of course. This error was adjusted and return to the briefed course was made in the vicinity of Leige. The briefed course was flown to the Belgian coast, and departure made at 1247 (thirteen minutes early) at 7,000 feet, 3,000 feet below the briefed altitude. The return to England was flown north of course in order to fly in the areas of least cloud interference. The English coast was crossed north of Clacton at 1320 (eighteen minutes early) at 1,000 feet. Return to base was flown without incident.
    7.  Fighter Support – Very good.
    8.  Comments – No enemy aircraft were encountered. No aircraft were lost. There was moderate to intense continuous following flak at the target. Eight to nine-tenths cloud in the surrounding target areas. The weather report of the Scouting Force was of no value to the 94th "A" Group.
    9.  Aircraft Not Attacking – The flying spare in the lead squadron returned as planned. Aircraft 42-97701, pilot Lt. Woodrum, returned from over enemy territory with a reported mechanical failure. This was the lead aircraft of the high squadron, and was replaced by the deputy aircraft. Aircraft 42-107124, pilot Lt. Carle, returned from within England (Low Squadron) with a reported mechanical failure, and was replaced by the flying spare scheduled to fly with the high squadron.

Preliminary Damage Assessment:
  1. The target for the three squadrons of this group was the Ordnance Depot at Kassel, Germany. Bombing was done by PFF with a visual assist. Photo cover is fair for all squadrons.
  2. The bombs of the lead squadron fell in the target area but clouds prevent accurate damage assessment. Three bursts can be seen on the small M/Y [RR Marshalling Yard] next to the depot and several bursts can be seen in the vicinity of the eastern end of the buildings.
  3. The bombs of the low squadron were dropped on smoke markers of the lead squadron and landed approximately one half mile short of the target area.
  4. The high squadron dropped on the smoke markers of the lead squadron and the bombs fell approximately one mile short of the target.
[Signed:] Thomas L. Cooper, Captain, Air Corps, Group P.I. [Photo Intelligence]

Narrative Teletype Report:
  1. No leaflets were carried on today's mission.
  2. Bombing was done by PFF methods with visual assist. A PFF run was started on Kassel but at the last moment the target was seen and a 45 second run made on the primary. The lead squadron bombing was fair with a scattered pattern. The low and high squadron dropped on the smoke markers of the lead squadron, with poor results.
  3. No enemy A/C were encountered by this group.
  4. There was moderate to intense continuous following flak at the target. On the way in moderate accurate continuous following was encountered in the vicinity of Koblenz. There were also a few accurate bursts on the way out over the Weser River 10 miles South of Kassel.
  5. Eight to nine/tenths cloud in surrounding areas. 5/10 cloud coverage over target.
  6. About 14 barrage balloons were noted at 51°10'N-09°04'E [Edersee, Germany] at a height of approximately 5,000 feet, suspended over a dam.
  7. Bombing was done by means of PFF with visual assistance. Fighter support was very good. None of our A/C is missing
