Operational Narrative – Lead Combat Box:
  1. Date of Mission - 14 October, 1944.
    1. Target Attacked: Cologne, Germany, by PFF methods. (Primary Target).
    2. Force – 94th “B” Group. Thirty-eight aircraft, including two flying spares and three PFF ships, took off.
    3. Position – Briefed and flew as fifth group in the “A” Task Force of First Division.
    4. Lead Teams

      Bombardier:2nd Lt. Gerald E. Traczewitz

      Low Squadron Lead
Leader: 1st Lt. Charles E. Wolcott

      Navigator:1st Lt. Joseph A. Glover
      Bombardier:1st Lt. Wayne R. Smith
  2. Narrative.
    1.  Group & Wing Assembly - The assembly was carried out at the Kings Cliffe buncher at 21,000 feet after the weather ship had advised an increase in the assembly altitude of 6,000 feet. As a result of this change in altitude the assembly was completed and departure from the assembly area made 5½ minutes late (1007½). An extra circle had been made in the assembly area to permit the low squadron to join the formation.
    2.  Route Over England – In order to make up the time lost in the higher assembly, a direct course to Splasher #6 was flown from the assembly point. This maneuver made up more time than was necessary and as a result, the English coast was reached at the briefed point at 1034 – 4 minutes early. The altitude at that time was at 21,000 feet – 1,000 feet above the briefed altitude.
    3.  Division Assembly Line: In order to lose time on the Division Assembly Line, a deviation to the right of course was flown while crossing the channel. It was possible to lose two minutes by the time the Belgian coast was reached at the briefed point at 1058 – two minutes early – at the briefed altitude of 24,000 feet. The 94th “B” Group had gotten into the proper position – fifth in the “A” Task Force before the Belgian coast had been reached when the aforementioned deviation was completed.
    4.  Flight to Target – The briefed route was followed to the right on the route into the target in order to keep away from the preceding group which was flying to the left of the 94th “B” Group. When the turn towards the IP [Initial Point of Bomb Run] was made, the 94th “B” Group Leader purposely made a wide turn to the right of course in order to fall in behind the 94th “A” Group and thus have the proper position.
    5.  Description of Bombing Run – Bombing was done by PFF methods. The Lead Squadron made a PFF sighting and the Low Squadron dropped on the smoke markers of the Lead Squadron. A turn was made which was east of the briefed IP. Cloud coverage in the target area was 9 to 10/10ths. The target was located and attacked by PFF. There was no interference on the bombing run. The C-1 Pilot [Autopilot] was used with no malfunctions. The High Squadron performed its own sighting operation. No interference was encountered on the bombing run. The C-1 Pilot was used without malfunction.
    6.  Flight From Target – After leaving the target area, the 94th “B” flew to the left of course and then cut inside of the briefed turn and flew to the right of the briefed course, gradually decreasing the divergency [sic] until the briefed route was being flown. The divergency [sic] from the briefed route was flown as a result of attempting to keep behind preceding formations and to avoid flak installations that were observed ahead. The briefed route was contacted shortly before the Belgian coast was reached. Departure was made at 1345 – four minutes early – at an altitude of 16,000 feet. A normal let-down procedure was followed without difficulty. The English coast was crossed nine minutes early (1418) at 2,900 feet, and the return to base was flown without further difficulty.
    7.  Fighter Support – Very good.
    8.  Comments – No enemy aircraft opposition was encountered. Flak at the target was moderate and inaccurate. No aircraft were lost. The Scouting Force was used and was effective.
    9.  Aircraft Not Attacking – The flying spare in the Lead Squadron returned as planned. Aircraft 42-97258, pilot Captain Glazier, was unable to locate the formation in the assembly area and returned to base. The flying spare of the High Squadron replaced this aircraft.
    10.  PFF Aircraft – Two aircraft were furnished to each group in the 94th Combat Wing. All six are reported as having attacked the target.

Narrative Teletype Report:
  1. No leaflets were carried by this Group.
  2. Due to the 9/10ths cloud coverage, photos do not show bomb strikes. PFF operators estimate bombs fell in briefed MPI [Mean Point of Impact] area.
  3. No enemy aircraft opposition was encountered, and no claims [of enemy a/c being shot down] are being submitted.
  4. Flak at the target was moderate and inaccurate. On the way out, meager to moderate flak was observed at Koblenz, Limburg, and the Moselle River at 50°05’N-07°10’E [Ediger Laach, Germany].
  5. There was 8-9/10ths undercast [sic] over the continent.
  6. A great amount of rail activity was seen at Hachenburg, Betzdorf, and Siegen.
  7. PFF units were employed with good results. Fighter support was very good. Two B-17’s were seen going down in the target area and one chute was seen. One P-51 was hit by flak in the target area and exploded. No marks of identification were picked up on any of the aircraft. Scouting Force was used and it was effective. None of our aircraft is missing.
